A Baldwin County commissioner asked the board to begin exploring alternatives to the county’s current waste-management contract after multiple residents reported inconsistent service and confusing rules for disposing of large items.
During the new-business segment, a commissioner said she had received complaints that residents were being told to cut couches into sections before the contractor would accept them. “I’ve got a lot of complaints about trash and I would love … to start thinking about exploring what our options are. I just don’t think the service has been very good at all,” the commissioner said.
County manager Carlos Tobar acknowledged ongoing issues and said staff has worked with the contractor to improve customer service. Tobar said he had discussed the matter with the contractor’s local manager and that staff is monitoring complaints, but commissioners said they want a formal review of the contract and expectations.
The board did not take a formal vote on the issue that night, but commissioners asked staff to collect complaint data and review contract terms so the commission can consider amendments or alternative providers at a future meeting.
Why it matters: Waste collection is an essential county service; contract terms and enforcement affect resident quality of life and county finances.
What happens next: County staff will compile complaints and return to the commission with a summary of problems, contractual remedies and potential options for changing service providers or renegotiating terms.
