Commission staff and the Phase 5 consultant recommended using part of those funds for a Form A area survey of the Pine Lakes neighborhood — a more expensive item that would document an ensemble of properties and landscape — because several recommendations from earlier phases identified that neighborhood for further study. The remaining money would be reserved for additional work.
Commissioners proposed alternatives: (1) a Pine Lakes Form A area inventory; (2) further individual barn documentation (some barns are attached to houses and may be under‑documented); or (3) a specific inventory of the town’s granite guideposts and 1797 mile markers. Commissioners noted the milestones are historic features of the Boston Post Road and that several have deteriorated.
Because the remaining funds are modest after accounting for the higher cost of a Form A, commissioners asked staff to research how barns are treated in MACRIS entries and to provide cost estimates for a milestone inventory vs. barn surveys. The group underscored the need to show progress to retain older CPC allocations and discussed phasing work so any restoration or inventory could proceed quickly once funds and procurement are in order.
Next steps: staff will gather cost estimates and scope descriptions for Pine Lakes Form A, barn inventories and a milestone inventory; commissioners will then decide which use best advances the Phase 5 goals and maximizes available funds.
