Historical commission agrees to send comments on Route 20 corridor study, urges recognition of Boston Post Road and inventoried resources

The Sudbury Historical Commission voted to send a letter to the town’s Route 20 corridor consultant urging more explicit attention to historic resources along the corridor, including the historic Boston Post Road and inventoried properties outside local historic districts.

Chairman Chris Haggerty moved the motion and commissioners approved it unanimously. The commission’s draft language builds on a letter the Sudbury Historic District Commission circulated and asks the consultant to acknowledge historic resources that lie outside the three designated historic districts and to note surviving guideposts and 1797 milestones that mark the former postal road.

Commissioners cited a recently distributed corridor map that shows the study area spanning from the Wayland town line through South Sudbury and noted the portion west of the fire station contains a concentration of inventoried pre‑1940 houses, workers’ cottages related to the greenhouse industry, and granite milestone markers. Commissioner Bill suggested naming the road explicitly as the historic Boston Post Road and including wording that describes the guideposts and mile markers as part of the road’s historic character.

The commission agreed that staff should send a short letter reinforcing that the Route 20 (Boston Post Road) study area includes historic resources outside district boundaries and that the commission is available to provide further comment as the planning process continues. The chairman said he would sign the letter and circulate it to commissioners.
