On van usage, Dennis said the department has been using the van for middle‑school pick‑ups and for field trips and Wild Wednesdays; when enrollment exceeds 11 the department uses a yellow school bus. Commissioners pressed about expanding pickup to elementary schools but staff said routing and school dismissal logistics make elementary pickups more complicated, and that staffing shortages limit the department’s ability to serve multiple pickup locations in the same day.
Commissioners suggested testing elementary school pickup on a limited basis (one school per Wild Wednesday or rotating among schools) but emphasized staffing constraints are the limiting factor. Dennis noted the department has used the van successfully for some sibling pickups and for February break programming and that adding younger elementary routes would require additional staff and planning.
Other programming notes: staff reported about 105 children currently enrolled across Sudbury Summers sessions, younger groups (age 5–6) are often potty‑training dependent and enroll later, and the middle‑school Sudbury Adventures program has weeks that are selling out. The department said it is coordinating with the pool on swim times for summer camps and that program capacity decisions will depend on confirmed staffing levels and available pool time.
