Blackstone schedules multi‑week water main flushing; residents warned to expect discolored water

Jimmy Sullivan, the Town of Blackstone Department of Public Works superintendent and water/sewer superintendent, told the Water Sewer Commission on April 10 that the town is conducting a multi‑week water main flushing program.
Sullivan said crews will flush hydrants on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from about 8 a.m. to roughly 2 p.m. for about four weeks and urged residents to expect some discolored water while lines are being cleared. "We're flushing for about 4 weeks... we're flushing 3 days a week. Expect some dirty water," Sullivan said.
Officials listed neighborhoods and streets on the flushing route: Melville, the Privilege section, the High Rocks/condo areas, Castle Hill and Farm Street, with work also noted in the Hamlet and Glenside areas. Sullivan said the program removes settled iron and manganese from lines after a winter in which fall flushing did not occur because of a water ban.
Staff said flushing each hydrant can take variable time and the crew cannot always predict the exact day a particular street will be flushed. The commission advised residents to consult the town website for updates and to avoid using affected lines for nonessential washing while crews are operating.
The commission also noted the town remains under a water conservation advisory; residents were encouraged to conserve water while the program continues.
