The Belpre City Council heard from city staff about a water infrastructure incident on Lee Street and about moving forward with bidding for a water tank and a 10-inch main replacement.
City staff reported that on Jan. 17 the water department responded to a leak on Lee Street involving a 10-inch water main. Crews shut valves for about eight hours to isolate and repair the failure, and staff issued a boil advisory for affected residences and businesses until testing confirmed the water was safe. "After testing the water, making sure it was safe, we lifted the boil advisory," a city official said.
Mary Dolan told the council that a legal notice for the water tank and the 10-inch water main had been published in the paper on Friday the 24th and will run again the following Friday; the notices will also be posted on the city's website under community and public bid postings. Dolan said the RFQ for engineering firms for the wastewater treatment plant would go live on the city's site the next day.
Dolan also said the city has interviewed candidates for a utility coordinator position that will handle water monitoring software, backflow work and EPA regulation compliance, and will assist the water department with monthly readings and billings. Staff said they are waiting on Dominion Energy to mark a utility line near the leak before completing some repairs.
Council members were invited to receive further updates as staff monitors the situation and completes procurement posts for the tank and main work. City staff said they will provide follow-up reports and timelines when bids are received and engineering proposals are evaluated.
