Blackstone senior center expands fitness and outreach programs, adds staff

The Town of Blackstone Senior Center reported expanded health, wellness and outreach services and two new staff roles during its April 3 Council on Aging meeting. Director (Senior Center) said the center now offers fitness and wellness programs every weekday and has a new outreach worker on staff.
The director said the center recently hired a new bus driver, Matt Gilmore, and an outreach worker, Gilda, who is "already meeting with people in their homes and booking appointments" for services including fuel assistance, food stamps and housing. The director also described a program that places two senior tax work-off participants on buses to assist drivers and riders on longer or more complicated trips.
The center has increased its fitness schedule from two days a week to daily programming, the director said. Current offerings include line dancing, meditation, strength and conditioning, chair yoga, tap dancing, Zumba Gold, Tai Chi (beginner and advanced), grief counseling, an "Aging Gracefully" support group, and a vigorous Friday pound fitness class. The director said those programs typically include two classes per day and that participation is up since the schedule expanded.
The Artful Dodger painting class continues off-site; the director said the current six-week session costs $24 and has about eight regular participants. The director also reported new software for payroll, accounting and participation tracking.
The meeting did not include a formal vote on program funding or policy changes; the director framed the report as routine program updates and staffing announcements.
