Parks staff: budget on track; splash pad and Sheffield Trail progress, community center HVAC set for summer

Parks staff reported to the Fife Parks Advisory Board that department finances are generally on target through February and provided progress updates on several park capital projects and upcoming events.
Marta briefed the board that the department is about 16.67% through the fiscal year. She reported aquatics revenues at about 17% and aquatics expenses at about 16%; recreation revenues were around 26% with recreation expenses at 16%; parks expenses were approximately 13% year-to-date. Staff said these levels indicate revenues and expenses are tracking near expectations for the period.
On capital projects, Marta said the aquatic center roof project has reached substantial completion and is awaiting final inspection and caulking before closeout. The community center HVAC and kitchen mechanical work had a kickoff meeting and is projected to begin around June 16 with completion in mid'to'late August; intermittent community center closures are expected during the work. Wedge Park remains in bid-preparation while a Community Development Block Grant from Pierce County is under HUD review. Sheffield Trail is significantly ahead of schedule, with most vegetation installed and retaining-wall work in progress. The splash pad project is progressing, with concrete pours and building framing underway; staff's internal target is a July 1 opening, though no public opening date has been announced.
Staff also reviewed upcoming community events: the spring festival and egg hunt at Dacca Park (Saturday, April 19, gates 9:30 a.m., event 10:00'12:30 p.m.) with carnival games, vendors and prefilled eggs; and Parks Appreciation Day at 5 Acre Park on April 26 (9 a.m.'noon). Staff said they will provide volunteer and staffing details for events and confirmed supplies such as Easter bunny ears and prize baskets.
On staffing and boards, staff said outreach to fill vacant Parks Advisory Board seats has not yet produced applicants; staff noted that five of seven board members must be Fife residents and that up to two members may work in Fife or live in the Fife Urban Growth Area.
