The Fife Parks Advisory Board voted to forward a staff-drafted letter to the City Council recommending that the 7.25-acre park property at 3408 Seventieth Avenue East include the Salzman name in its official designation. The property was willed to the city by Georgine Salzman; the family has lived locally since the early 1900s.
Marta (parks staff) described short-term plans to partner with Sahale (a nonprofit) to operate the site as a U-pick berry farm and to run nature-focused classes from the existing house on the property. She said the partnership will maintain the property in the near term; long-term plans for the site have not been established.
Board members discussed wording in the draft letter. The original draft named the site "Salzman Memorial Park." One member proposed and the board passed an amendment to strike the explicit park name and end the letter after recommending the park bear the Salzman name (effectively leaving final naming language to council and staff). The amended motion passed by voice vote.
Staff said they will forward the amended letter to City Council and will work with the Salzman family on final details when council initiates the formal naming and park-designation process. During discussion, staff said they believed revenue from U-pick operations would be returned to the city as revenue, but they did not provide definitive financial terms in the meeting.
The board's action instructs staff to transmit the board's recommendation to City Council; final naming and any long-term park plans remain subject to council action and further planning.
