Council swears in two officers; city recognizes public works, code enforcement and a fraud investigator

Judge Curry swore in two newly appointed police officers. The council and department leaders recognized Officer Connor Powers for a fraud investigation that led to prosecution, Matthew Bingham in public works for leadership, and Kurt Heck in code enforcement for casework.
Judge Curry administered oaths at the March 12 Orting City Council meeting for two newly presented police officers, Officer Joshua Guyette and Officer Whitney Hobbs. Both recited the oath of office and were formally welcomed to the department.
Deputy Mayor Koenig and council members offered congratulations. Council members noted that Officer Guyette graduated at the top of his academy class and that Officer Hobbs received academic recognition in academy training.
The council also recognized several employees for service. Chief Kurbeluk commended Officer Connor Powers for leading a fraud investigation involving misuse of funds at a local nonprofit; Chief Kurbeluk said Powers worked with partner agencies, wrote search warrants, reviewed records and helped secure a prosecution and sentencing. Director McBee and Director Gunderson recognized Matthew Bingham for leadership and mentorship in public works, praising his rise from temporary employee to maintenance lead. Director Gunderson also formally commended Kurt Heck for managing nearly a dozen active code-enforcement cases and improving responsiveness to resident complaints.
Council members and the mayor’s office expressed appreciation to the employees and to the families who attended the ceremony.
