Norwalk Police recognize training team after departmentwide firearms transition and new defensive-tactics training

The Norwalk Police Commission on Jan. 27 recognized Officer David Bush and Officer Nick Discola as the department’s officers of the month for December 2024 for leading a large firearms replacement and training effort.
Chief Walsh told the commission the department received capital funding in February 2024 to replace duty firearms that had been in service for more than a decade. Bush and Discola led the evaluation of manufacturers and models, coordinated selection in consultation with administration, and managed a transition that began in late November and continued mainly in December 2024. The rollout covered issuing new duty firearms (Glock 9mm) to roughly 80 sworn employees and associated training.
In addition to the firearms transition, the officers organized defensive-tactics training intended to limit injuries to arrestees and officers, and delivered less-lethal training covering handcuffing and taser tactics. Chief Walsh said the training required bringing many officers in off duty for 8-hour courses and accounted for an increase in training-division overtime for the month.
Commissioners praised the training division’s work and noted that the department follows Department of Justice recommendations on equipment replacement intervals. Chief Walsh said replaced older firearms are returned to the supplier for a credit.
Officer Bush attended the meeting with a guest; commissioners and the chief expressed appreciation for the training staff’s efforts in improving department readiness.
