Commissioners noted existing materials from last year are available in a shared Google Drive and can be adapted. The current documentation—previously used for nominations—describes recognizing two honorees: one youth (under 18) and one adult (18 and older) whose actions have had a positive impact on women, girls and other marginalized gender identities. Committee members said that language is broad and inclusive but recommended the subcommittee review and confirm it.
Members discussed calendar conflicts (city and community events in May and June) and agreed to check with City Hall staff (including Will Schwarzstein or his office) about other scheduled events before finalizing a date. The committee also discussed PR and marketing needs, with one commissioner offering to help with outreach and article-writing to promote awardees.
Because committee membership is small, members agreed the awards subcommittee (Joy Futaba de Jaeger, Jasmine, Shannon, and Sarah Rendon Garcia) should meet in the next one to two weeks to develop a recommendation for the full commission. The subcommittee will record the meeting date, attendees and a high-level summary for the commission record and present its recommendation at the next full meeting. Members discussed options for scaling the event—keeping a short awards segment or embedding it in a larger convening—and noted resource and time constraints might dictate a simpler approach or alternating-year cadence.
