Commission amends hospital sign manual to allow donor naming on Maple Street garage

The Planning and Zoning Commission Feb. 19 approved an amendment to the Norwalk Hospital sign manual to permit two exterior, non-illuminated donor name signs on the hospital’s existing Sautinger parking garage.
Hospital representatives Sarah Myers and Nadine Landau described the request as a way to honor a foundation donation to Nuvance Health Network. The proposed signs are brushed stainless-steel dimensional letters, stud-mounted into brick and precast concrete at two locations: the main entrance drive and the threshold at the lower-level ramp.
"These donations are permanent. And as long as the structure exists, these letters will exist," Sarah Myers said during the presentation. She also said that if a future merger or name change required broader revisions to hospital signage, the hospital would return to the commission to update the sign manual.
Commission discussion noted that the hospital has a site-specific sign manual because of its unique campus use and that the requested dimensional letters did not conflict with city sign standards for that property. One proposed third sign location was withdrawn after internal review, Myers said.
After a motion and roll-call vote, the commission approved the amendment to the sign manual; staff said the hospital will next apply for a sign permit consistent with the newly amended manual.
