Norwalk Arts Commission approves up to $1,000 for poetry-slam and open-mic nights

The Norwalk Arts and Cultural Commission voted March 4 to approve an expenditure not to exceed $1,000 to support two upcoming events: a poetry slam for National Poetry Month and a special open-mic night produced with Factory Underground.

City staff told commissioners the poetry event will honor the poet laureate and feature invited poets; the commission authorized funds for modest event expenses (marketing support from Business Development and Tourism, artist materials, snacks and beverages, and videography). Staff estimated roughly $450 for the poetry event and $350–$400 for the Factory Underground open-mic night; the total request was capped at $1,000 to allow minor flexibility.

The events will be free and open to the public; staff said they plan to curate a roster of poets for the poetry slam and to record the events for a short live-recording release. Sabrina said the city will use Eventbrite signups to gather email addresses for future outreach. Commissioner Nori Gruden and others discussed venue capacity: the likely room is the Factory Underground second floor with informal capacity around 100.

Commissioners approved the funding by voice vote without objection. During the meeting staff also provided a brief budget update: a previously outstanding $1,200 bill for a scissor lift used on a mural installation will reduce available capital; the commission’s request for $20,000 in operating funds for special events remains in the CFO’s and mayor’s recommended budgets and will be considered by BETE at an upcoming meeting.

Commissioners asked staff to include a small line item for materials for visual artists when feasible, and staff said they will make event video available to the commission.
