Auburn‑Washburn board honors Farley staff and introduces two assistant principals

The Auburn‑Washburn Unified School District Board of Education opened its April 7 meeting with school highlights, recognizing Farley Elementary staff members and a student, then introducing two newly hired assistant principals for Washburn Rural High School.

Katie Sonnenmager, Farley Elementary principal, described PE teacher Lane Nash as “the kind of teacher every student and every school dreams of having,” praising his focus on teamwork, respect, perseverance and kindness and noting his presence before and after school as well as leadership of after‑school clubs. Sonnenmager said Nash’s work with students who struggle with behavior — including the school’s “Nash time” incentive — is a powerful motivator and that he volunteers on the building leadership team.

Sonnenmager also introduced Tasha Alum as the school’s all‑star classified staff member, saying, “She instinctively knows how to build meaningful relationships, meet kids where they are, and help them grow.” The board recognized Alexa Mitchell as Farley’s shining‑star student; Sonnenmager noted Mitchell’s progress with dyslexia and added, “She doesn't need applause or external rewards to do the right thing.”

The meeting then shifted to administrative introductions. Ed Raines, speaking at the dais, introduced Clayton Schroeder, who said he is a Washburn Rural resident and that he brings 18 years in education, including assistant principal and elementary principal roles. “I’m excited about this opportunity because I'm a resident of Washburn Rural,” Schroeder told the board.

Raines also introduced Chris Reffitt, who described prior work in public and Catholic schools and said he and his family are moving into the district. Reffitt told the board he is “very excited” to join Washburn Rural’s administrative team.

The recognitions concluded before the board moved on to consent items and the evening’s business agenda.
