Summary
Superintendent Dr. Cervone highlighted district activities including a spotlight on Allendale Elementary’s service projects, the Mobile Museum of Tolerance at West Senior, a district-wide art show and plans for auditorium and vehicle needs.
Superintendent Dr. Cervone used the April 8 meeting to highlight district events, student achievements and recent programs. The superintendent noted a districtwide art show at the West Seneca Community Center with more than 250 pieces on display through May 15, student participation in the 24 math contest for fourth and fifth graders, and hall-of-famer Thurman Thomas speaking with student athletes.
The board also recognized Allendale Elementary students for service-learning projects. Students described drives for veterans’ toiletry items, posters for school events, card and craft deliveries to nursing-home residents, and a children’s hospital drive that collected “over 20 boxes,” according to the student presenters. The superintendent and board thanked staff and volunteers for arranging the student visits and community transport.
Dr. Cervone also updated the board on staffing and special-education programming: the district is approaching the budget as “staffing neutral” but has added interventionists and expanded some in-district special-education classes. The superintendent said that increases in occupational and related services and teacher aides have accompanied the return of some special-education programs to district schools.
Finally Dr. Cervone previewed upcoming events — spring recess April 14–18, a board work session April 22, a redistricting committee meeting April 24 and the Students of Excellence dinner on April 29 — and thanked the board for visiting classroom programs such as the West Designs course at West Senior where students run a small business process from idea to delivery.
