Vice chair proposes pause on long-term facilities planning until new superintendent arrives

Vice Chair Abigail Alt asked the ISD 191 board on April 10 to consider pausing long-term facility maintenance (LTFM) planning until the district's new superintendent begins work this summer. "With Dr. Battle retiring in June... I would like to suggest that this board consider giving staff direction to place a pause on all LTFM long range plans and projects for now," Alt said, adding a caveat that staff should bring forward any time-sensitive financial opportunities before summer for board consideration.

Board discussion covered the scope and timing of the pause. Director Hield clarified that the proposal referred to the long list of LTFM projects discussed at the previous meeting and not routine LTFM work scheduled for the summer. Director Ault and other members generally supported pausing active planning so the incoming superintendent can "put their stamp on this project," while Director Hugh suggested staff could continue drafting a guiding change document so a draft would be ready when the new superintendent starts.

Superintendent Teresa Battle clarified that the approved 10-year LTFM plan would continue. She said the design process for requests previously presented was expected to start in the fall and that the pause was not intended to halt already-approved elements of the 10-year plan.
