Clayton council sets cleanup day, tightens event policies and plans downtown grant reapplication

The Town of Clayton council on May 8 set a community cleanup for Saturday, June 14, discussed tighter rules for festivals and street closures and agreed to reapply for a downtown parking lot grant.

Volunteer cleanup: Council confirmed Denny Excavating will again provide equipment and that the cleanup will run roughly 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 14. Denny Excavating will continue to recycle collected metal, as the town and volunteers agreed last year. Council asked organizers to tighten drop‑off controls after some problems with unauthorized material last year.

Festivals and events policy: Council members asked staff to draft a formal events policy for May that will require event sponsors to present a finalized plan to the council and the police department at least 30 days before an event. The policy will require DOT‑approved reflective barricades for nighttime events, defined cut‑off times for street closures, and a named town representative on permit applications to prevent last‑minute changes. The council said event plans must be approved by both the council and the police department and that staff will add a requirement that a sponsor representative attend the council meeting prior to high‑impact events for a plan review.

Music in the Park and holiday events: Council confirmed music‑in‑the‑park dates (June 28, July 19 and Aug. 30) and said it will add clearer expectations for staging and lighting after problems at last year’s Christmas program. Staff will draft the policy language for the June meeting.

Downtown grant reapplication: The town said it will reapply to a wireless carrier’s downtown grant program for a $50,000 award to help repave or otherwise improve a parking lot. Staff requested additional support letters and said the funder asks for a minimum of five letters; the council asked community organizations and churches to submit letters of support. The council will resubmit the application after collecting more letters.
