The Gulfport City Council approved an ordinance to establish one full‑time center coordinator at any community center that offers full‑time activities to the public, beginning with a post for Gaston Point.
Leisure services staff explained the new position is intended to provide a single coordinator responsible for running a center. During council Q&A, Councilmember Casey asked whether the coordinator would replace or work with recreational aides; staff confirmed there will still be recreational aides in the building and that the coordinator would effectively run the center. “The center coordinator, he's the guy that runs the center,” Casey said. Staff said one building currently has two recreational aides and the change would convert one position at that location to a coordinator while retaining other aides.
Council members noted demand for programs at multiple centers and said they expect activity to increase beginning July 1. Leisure services representatives told the council some centers — including Magnolia Grove — will need additional programming and coordination support to meet community demand. The ordinance was approved by unanimous voice vote.
