City continues Community Violence Reduction Services through traditional funds; UAMS provides hospital-based wraparound services

Summary
Board heard that Community Violence Reduction Services, originally funded with ARPA, will continue through traditional CYF funding and that UAMS is the hospital system currently providing immediate wraparound resources to gun-injury victims.
The board discussed continuing Community Violence Reduction Services originally funded with Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery (ARPA) dollars and transitioning that work into the city's traditional Children, Youth and Families (CYF) funding process. The mayor said the $2,000,000 in ARPA funds previously used for violence-intervention efforts had been a one-time allocation and that ongoing services are being considered through regular CYF processes.
"This is part of our PIT program... when there's a gun victim or a gun incident, UAMS quickly provides resources to those individuals because many times a, retaliation could happen at the actual hospital," the mayor said, describing hospital-based immediate response and wraparound services intended to prevent retaliation and support recovery.
The mayor said UAMS applied to provide the service; other hospital systems such as Baptist or St. Vincent could apply if funds are available. The mayor also noted the CYF board recommended continuing the program and that Director Webb was part of that board's recommendation.
Board members asked for more detail on exactly how funds would be spent in the community; the mayor said staff would provide additional information. No formal funding decision was taken at the meeting.
