Council issues will of council asking administration to halt work at Nunley Park pending public plan

The Wasilla City Council voted 6-0 to adopt a "will of the council" asking the administration to stop ongoing redevelopment activity at Nunley Park until a formal plan—developed with the Parks and Recreation Commission, Public Works, city staff and park users—is prepared and approved.
Council Member Graham, who moved the item, told colleagues he had received 41 phone calls from constituents upset that trees were removed and that park users had not been included in the planning. “What has happened over there was not in line with what the council, passed over the last 2 years as far as park improvements go,” Graham said. He asked that the council and community be involved in a transparent process that includes professional contractors and a landscape architect.
Administration reported that current work at the park has been conducted by city personnel with no contractors engaged. City staff said they will return to the council with a resolution that specifies the steps and scope of a pause and the process for completing a plan for Nunley Park. The motion recorded a nonbinding will of the council; city officials said a formal resolution will be prepared for a subsequent meeting.
The motion passed on a roll-call vote of 6-0. Council members said they expected a follow-up resolution describing next steps and any funding needs.
