Wasilla council approves $75,000 transfer to cover heavy-equipment repairs

The Wasilla City Council at its regular meeting adopted Ordinance Serial Number 25-04, approving a $75,000 transfer from the general fund to the roads repair-and-maintenance account to cover unanticipated repairs to large pieces of equipment.
Council members moved and seconded the ordinance and then heard from Eric, the city’s public works director, who explained the need. “The way that regular vehicle maintenance is paid for is out of the repair and maintenance fund within the roads,” Eric said. He told the council that recent extensive repairs to the city’s Vactor truck and a sander have reduced the account’s working capital and could affect spring operations.
The mayor and staff told the council this is a one-time backfill so the repairs-and-maintenance account has liquidity while the city closes out the fiscal year. Eric said the proposed budget for the next fiscal year will include a new dedicated line item within roads for large-equipment repairs so finance can better associate major repair costs to the affected asset.
Council members asked whether unused personnel dollars in the roads department could cover the repairs; Eric and the mayor said that the roads division currently has no open positions and therefore no available personnel savings to reallocate. After discussion the council took a roll-call vote; the ordinance passed unanimously.
The ordinance restores the roads maintenance account so spring road work and routine maintenance can proceed while staff designs a longer-term budget fix for heavy-equipment repairs.
