Students urge MCPS to keep coed volleyball teams, say cuts would harm inclusion

Two student speakers told the Montgomery County Board of Education during public comment that a proposed change to replace coed volleyball teams with a junior varsity boys program would remove a valued inclusive opportunity.
Zora Vieland, freshman class president at Einstein High School, described coed volleyball as “a community, a family, and a safe space for all of us regardless of gender.” She said losing the team would take away a place where students build teamwork, respect and belonging and that “this decision raises significant concerns particularly regarding equity and inclusion, and I believe it misinterprets Title IX spirit and intent.”
London Briscoe, a freshman at Wheaton High School, said coed volleyball “allows students of all genders to compete together, creating a unique environment that fosters teamwork, respect, and inclusivity,” and urged the board to pursue alternatives to cutting the program such as fundraising or sponsorships rather than eliminating it.
Ending: Both students asked the board to consider the social and developmental benefits of coed athletics and to weigh those benefits before approving roster or program changes.
