High Springs commission approves meeting calendar, one-day alcohol exception for car show, Priest Theatre grant extension and seeks affected-party status on Tom

Hot Rodding for Heroes: temporary alcohol exception

The commission temporarily suspended the city's alcohol-consumption ordinance for the Hot Rodding for Heroes one-day event on the block in front of the brewery so attendees can walk the car show area without the usual boundary restriction. Police leadership reported no objections, asked that beverages be served in covered cups, and said the department does not anticipate enforcement problems. The motion was approved by voice vote.

Priest Theatre grant extension

The commission approved an amendment to extend the deadline for the state grant tied to Priest Theatre repairs. City staff said the state review of additional wall pressure tests has been in process for at least six weeks and that the amendment would extend the grant deadline to late December to allow time for state approval and subsequent bidding and construction. "This isn't official until everybody signs it," a staff member said; "it basically extended the grant from June to December." The commission approved the extension by voice vote.

Affected-party letter: Tomoka Hills development

The commission authorized the city attorney to send a letter to the City of Alachua requesting affected-party status for a planned Tomoka Hills development at the southwest corner of I-75 and U.S. 441. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioner discussion cited concerns that proposed golf-course development near sink features and fractures could affect groundwater and springs and noted the county had already signaled similar concerns.
