HCAI webinar explains ASCE 7‑22 changes for OPM/OSP preapprovals, urges manufacturers to update certifications
Summary
HCAI engineers reviewed ASCE 7‑22 updates to preapproval calculations for equipment supports (OPMs) and special seismic certification (OSPs), advised manufacturers to renew approvals to the 2022/2025 code, and said updated application forms will be available by July 1.
Timothy Piland, Senior Structural Engineer with the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI), led a July webinar on incorporating ASCE 7‑22 Chapter 13 changes into HCAI preapproval programs for equipment supports and seismically tested components.
Piland said the session focused on changes to the horizontal seismic force equation (F_p) used for HCAI OPM (equipment support) and OSP (special seismic certification) approvals and how design professionals should apply the new variables. "The goal of the preapproval program is to reduce construction cost," Piland told attendees, adding that clearer, updated preapproval data will make it easier for project design professionals to compare project demands to preapproval capacities.
The presentation emphasized several technical shifts in ASCE 7‑22 adopted into HCAI preapprovals. Piland explained that preapproval capacities can no longer be derived only from SDS and z/h; the new equation requires SDS and H_f/R_u and (for HCAI materials) an expanded set of coefficients the presenter labeled a consolidated C_p. He drew a…
