Commissioners ask for nominations for jail study steering committee as AberMarsh conducts evaluation

Staff described AberMarsh’s role in evaluating the current jail and recommended forming a steering committee with representatives from corrections, the sheriff’s office, judges, community mental health, public defenders and other community partners. Commissioners suggested candidates with corrections experience, public defenders, Community Mental Health representatives and others who use or work in the system.
The county asked commissioners to submit names for the committee by week’s end; staff said they would review nominations, convene the initial steering committee and may expand it later depending on the study’s scope. Commissioners stressed that this committee is advisory for the study and not a decision on whether to build a new jail or seek a millage.
Staff and commissioners emphasized the need for a broad cross-section of community input to inform recommendations that could address rehabilitation and operational improvements as well as physical facility questions.
