Barry County forms jail stakeholder committee to guide study and planning

Barry County’s Board of Commissioners approved a stakeholder committee to advise a county jail study and future planning, naming a mix of law-enforcement, corrections, mental-health and local-government representatives.
The committee will begin as a stakeholder group focused on technical issues and later expand into a broader community committee. The chair said the group is intended to include people with experience across prosecution, corrections, the sheriff’s office, 9-1-1 responders and community mental health to ensure the study considers rehabilitation and operational needs as well as facility design.
Names discussed for the committee included Judge Shipper, Ina Straub, Julie Nakfort Pratt, Stephanie Laymon, Carrie Selleck or Carol Dwyer (public defender), Dale Bolter, representatives from the City of Hastings and Prairieville Township police, Craig Stolzenberg, Cheryl Lewis Blake, Ron Lehi, Rich Timke (Barry County Community Mental Health), Marsha Bassett, Mike Colton and Bob Tunison. Corrections staff listed included Pete Nevins (director of corrections division) and Kelly Smith (sergeant, corrections). The chair said the stakeholder group will later add community members as the process moves from technical planning to community engagement.
Commissioner Hatfield moved to approve the stakeholder committee as recommended by the board chair; Commissioner Smelker supported the motion. The clerk recorded ayes from Bassett, Getty, Smelker, Tunison, Hatfield and Jackson. The motion carried.
