Glynn County BOE receives construction updates; Saint Simons contract returns $73,666 credit

Facilities staff provided a multi-project update to the Glynn County Board of Education at the April 10 work session, reporting a final change order credit on the Saint Simons Elementary School contract and progress on several other capital projects.
Staff member Haywood said the district has submitted a final change order for the Saint Simons Elementary construction contract with McKnight Construction that would close out McKnight’s work and return a $73,666 credit to the project contingency. She said a few lingering site items remain to be handled in-house but that the contract portion with McKnight would be wrapped up if approved.
Haywood reported continued progress on the College of Coastal Georgia Fine Arts Center and work on the Board of Education office, where a canopy has been demolished and sandblasting will be scheduled outside normal business hours because of the mess that task creates. She also said Wing 3 office renovations are advancing with metal studs and office separations completed.
For the BHS field house, Haywood said work would begin the Monday following the meeting with footer and foundation work and that pouring of footers was expected the next week. She estimated the field house to be about a 10-month project and said the schedule would be coordinated around the football program when necessary.
Haywood said the RFP for site clearing on the new Glendale Elementary School has been issued and that staff will present a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) request for site clearing at the May board meeting.
Athletics staff member Hagel presented equipment needs for the new field house, asking the board to approve weight-room equipment to outfit the facility with approximately 96 stations at a cost of $346,675. Hagel said the package covers racks, bands, kettlebells and related equipment and would bring facilities at the two high schools to comparable capacity.
On safety systems, Haywood requested board approval to purchase a new fire alarm control panel and detection devices for Goodyear Elementary from Associated Systems of Georgia for $64,700. She said the system matches the one installed at Greer last summer and that parts for the older system were becoming obsolete.
No formal procurement votes were recorded on these items during the work session; presenters said some requests will return on the consent or business agenda at a future meeting for formal approval.
