On signage, staff reported they had a vendor quote for an 18-by-24-inch display with a treated wood post, printed graphics and an acrylic face and asked commissioners whether they prefer the single-panel sign or a three-sided kiosk consistent with other city storyboard signs. Commissioners said they want sign copy and mockups returned to the commission for approval before fabrication, and they emphasized a uniform citywide sign standard and QR-code functionality for future installations.
Regarding the three totems (the 'Kinabrew collection' referenced in staff notes), staff said the metal totems currently show remnants of earlier paint and will require sandblasting. Commission members debated whether to repaint or to retain raw metal after sandblasting; they also discussed anchor and bolt details for mounting. Staff said each totem has welded anchor plates and hollow footings that will require welding, sealing and bolting to concrete pads; commissioners asked staff to take photos and stand the pieces in place so the committee can assess spacing and height relationships before final siting.
For the Gate of Inspiration, staff shared site photos and asked whether the commission intended the sculpture to sit on the top of a retaining mound at Windjammer Park or just in front of it. Staff reported the statue’s base measures about 7 by 6 feet and said the top-of-mound location likely lacks sufficient room; the commission agreed to visit the proposed site with staff and the placement committee to determine the best orientation and to consider solar alignment or sightlines as part of placement decisions.
Commissioners also noted an outstanding agreement item related to the Drake estate angel sculpture: a plaque with the artist’s phrase is part of the installation agreement and commissioners said the plaque should be included either on a kiosk panel or as a brass plaque on the sculpture base. Staff said they will prepare mockups, coordinate with public works on mounting details, and return to the commission with images and recommended wording for final approval.
