The Senate on April 10 approved a committee recommendation for HCR 142, urging the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Department of Transportation to expand the Kalahea airport greetings program to display art in all neighbor‑island airports.
Supporters told the committee the program would introduce visitors to local culture and help youth art education. "Art teaches youth a wide variety of valuable skills, including creativity, expression, vocabulary building, and building a creative skill set," said Angela Melody Young, testifying on behalf of CARES in strong support of the measure. She said the airport displays can integrate Hawaiian music and cultural activities and help align workforce development in creative sectors such as filmmaking and music.
The measure received no discussion opposing it in committee and was recommended "pass as is." The Committee on Transportation and Culture and the Arts recorded an aye vote from Chair Lee, the vice chair, Sen. Kaiali‘i Elefante, Sen. Gilbert Kahele Kanuha and Sen. Jarrod DeCort; the measure was adopted by that committee as presented. The Economic Development and Tourism committee likewise recorded its recommendation to pass HCR 142.
Caroline Anderson, identified in the hearing roster as an interim president and CEO presenting comments on behalf of an authority, was listed as a testifier but did not have recorded remarks in the transcript excerpt.
HCR 142 is an expression of committee-level support requesting HTA and DOT coordination; the measure passed committee consideration and will remain in the legislative process for any further required steps.
