Councilman Jermaine Hartley introduced an ordinance on March 18 that would require security guards at nightclubs in Jackson to complete an eight-hour orientation course provided by the Jackson Police Department.
“I’m introducing this… We have a nightclub in my ward. We have a lot of complaints and issues,” Hartley said, citing recent incidents including a homicide as motivating the proposal. He described the measure as an orientation—not a certification—and said it is intended to improve coordination between nightclub security and JPD, protect patrons and help businesses operate safely.
Hartley said the orientation would not be a formal certification or licensing program but an information exchange so private security would be aware of “ground rules” and local law-enforcement practices. The item was presented as an introduction and will return for further public discussion and formal action at a later meeting.
