Staff noted the primary (top) range tee likely will open May 1 when soil temperatures support regrowth; the middle range tee will undergo reconstruction starting in May with a target of several weeks of grow-in time.
On drainage infrastructure, staff described failing culverts under several fairways, focusing on the seventh and third holes. For hole 7, staff said a roughly 200-foot run of culvert material needs replacement and that preliminary material-only pricing for that run was “about $15,000.” Staff characterized that figure as a preliminary estimate based on phone checks of average prices and said a firm contractor quote is in progress.
The staff member said portions of the existing pipe are galvanized or clay and that some sections appear to have slipped at connection points. Staff reported plans to excavate test sections to confirm pipe sizes; initial observations suggest openings near 18 inches at some locations but staff said final confirmation requires digging. Staff discussed temporary measures—filling localized holes with stone, landscape fabric and soil to maintain safe turf travel—until a full replacement can be scheduled.
Operations staff proposed delaying major culvert replacement until the new fiscal year (on or after July 1) and targeting construction during a lower-usage window in late November or December so heavier equipment can operate without as much play disruption. Staff also described outreach plans to the conservation commission for input this spring and to mosquito control regarding brook clearing; staff said prior contact indicated a multi-year queue for dredging work.
No contract awards or capital appropriations were approved at the meeting; staff recommended obtaining detailed contractor quotes and returning to the commission with a defined scope, schedule and cost estimate before authorizing major work.
Staff also said course events and closures will be posted earlier and more prominently in clubhouse foyers and on a patio whiteboard so patrons know about scheduled closures and activities.
