Gracie Mae Bazarick and Kendall Woods, eighth‑grade students at Hubbell Middle School, told the CUSD 200 Board of Education on April 9 that the student ambassador leadership team called SALT gives members leadership experience and helps run the school’s annual talent show.
The students said SALT is student‑led, that members are recommended by teachers and then selected by club sponsors, and that the club meets weekly. "SALT is a special club for several reasons. For one, SALT is student led," Gracie Mae Bazarick told the board. She and Woods said the club organizes tours for new students, runs an annual talent show and does service projects; the students said the talent show raised a total of $2,400 for Ronald McDonald House and a humanitarian service project over the last two years.
The student ambassadors described the show’s logistics — auditions, rehearsals, marketing, backstage roles and fundraising — and said serving as directors taught problem solving and teamwork. "We had to be ready to work together for a common goal and solve problems on the fly," Bazarick said.
Caitlin Virga, a school psychologist at Hubbell who co‑sponsors SALT, told the board the school has started 18 clubs launched by students and that 94 percent of Hubbell students participate in at least one activity. Virga said athletics and arts participation has been strong this year and highlighted Hubbell’s musical and other programs as examples of student engagement.
Superintendent Daniel Schuler and staff recognized community partner Axiom (Accxiom/Axiom) Media Group for sponsoring student internships in broadcast media; district staff reported two students have taken internships at the company this school year. Rob Davidson and Cody Sumner from Axiom Media were invited to the meeting and were publicly thanked by district staff.
