Representative Hall, sponsor of House Bill 258, told members the bill increases penalties for assaulting utility workers, clarifies what constitutes an assault on those workers and requires workers to wear recognizable uniforms while on active duty. Representative Crawford offered and successfully carried a friendly amendment to add transportation workers to the bill; Crawford said the change was requested by the North Carolina Public Transportation Association.
The amendment was adopted on a recorded vote (112–0), and the House later recorded a second-reading tally of 109–1 on the committee substitute; the measure passed its third reading and was ordered engrossed and sent to the Senate.
