Council reviews and votes to support MassDevelopment site-readiness recoverable grant for Baconfelt demolition

The municipal council considered a communication from the Office of Economic and Community Development and voted to support acceptance of a MassDevelopment site-readiness recoverable grant related to the Baconfelt property at 395B Westwater Street.
Jay Patikas, executive director of the Taunton Office of Economic and Community Development, told the council the city had been awarded a recoverable grant formalized through a March 4 grant agreement and that the grant will fund demolition work. Patikas said demolition of the one-story portion of the structure was scheduled to begin imminently; he described recent site cleanup activity and removal of large dumpsters of material.
The resolution circulated to the council states the municipality has been awarded a site readiness recoverable grant in the amount of $350,325 for MassDevelopment readiness assistance related to the site, and describes repayment conditions if the site or a portion of it is conveyed and net proceeds are available. Patikas told the council $350,000 was the demolition bid received; he said the grant repayment clause is administrative and that MassDevelopment has been informed about the city’s plan for the site.
Councilors moved, seconded and voted to refer to the appropriate committee and to support acceptance of the grant so the city can proceed with the contracted demolition work and pay contractors under the grant terms.
