Board approves purchase‑order formality to replace 1,250 iPad cases; Apple to supply replacements at no cost

Tri‑Creek School Corporation trustees approved a purchase‑order authorization on April 10 that will allow Apple to replace about 1,250 defective iPad cases for students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 9.
Technology staff (Jay) told the board Apple originally provided 1,600 replacement cases that exhibited the same charging and audio‑jack issues as the initial batch. After testing, Apple agreed to accept the problematic cases back and provide replacement cases from a different manufacturer at no cost to the district. Because of district procurement procedures and Apple’s purchasing flow, staff said the district must issue a purchase order for approximately $125,000; staff added the invoice will be credited and no funds will actually be exchanged.
The board motion to approve issuing the purchase order carried unanimously. Staff said they hope to have replacement cases on devices before students leave for the summer so the devices do not need to be reissued in the fall.
Board members commended the technology director for negotiating the replacement at no net cost to the district. Staff noted the replacement cases will be rugged and resolve charging and audio problems when in use.
