Percy Potter wins Plainfield Community Middle School Battle of the Books final

Percy Potter won the 2024–25 Plainfield Community Middle School Battle of the Books final, finishing with 24 points, event organizers said.
The quiz-style competition brought four student teams from Plainfield Community Middle School together for 30 questions — 15 “which book” questions and 15 “in-book” detail questions — tested under timed rounds. A staff member leading the event explained that teams had 30 seconds after each question to confer and write answers on whiteboards and that “which book” questions could be worth zero, one or two points depending on whether the team gave the book and the author.
The contest format and rules mattered to teachers and volunteers who organized the event: teams earned one point for correct book answers in the in-book round, last names of authors were acceptable for attribution, and misspellings that left answers legible did not count against teams, the staff member said.
Students introduced themselves before the competition. Those who identified themselves included Gretchen (student); Megan Kelly (student); Hannah (student); Anna (student); Ava Blake (student); and Jocelyn Davis (student).
Four teams competed: Supercozy Caterpillars, Night Readers, Bookbusters and Percy Potter. After the first 15 “which book” questions, the staff member announced first-round totals: Supercozy Caterpillars 12 points, Night Readers 14, Bookbusters 16 and Percy Potter 20. After the second round of in-book questions, final totals were Supercozy Caterpillars 14, Night Readers 19, Bookbusters 22 and Percy Potter 24.
Organizers distributed gifts to participants: the winning team received items from the Blue Beetle and from the public library, and staff member Ashley photographed teams after the awards were handed out, the staff member said.
The event included public-library collaboration and teacher support, and the staff member acknowledged donations from the school’s parent–teacher organization (PATO) during opening remarks. The competition concluded with pictures of the teams and brief acknowledgments of student participation and staff support.
