District explores before- and after-care options for Universal Pre-K sites; UPK committee readies recommendations

South Huntington district staff told the board April 9 they are exploring before- and after-school care options for children enrolled through the district’s Universal Pre-K (UPK) lottery and that the UPK committee has finalized recommendations for the board.
Dr. D'Elia and Dr. Hender reported the district surveyed families selected in the UPK lottery to gauge interest in before- and after-care. Dr. Hender said preliminary counts show about 30 interested families at Silas, 15 at the district site referenced as “here” (Oakwood) and nine at Maplewood; the district said it needs roughly 15 enrolled students to justify running a section.
Staff said they will discuss space and vendor options — for example an RFP for vendors such as the YMCA — and noted school buildings are tight for space. Dr. D'Elia and Dr. Hender said they will continue work and return to the board with a formal recommendation; the UPK committee reported it had reached agreement on recommendations and planned to present them to the board in early May.
Ending: District staff said the UPK recommendations will be presented to the board after spring break and that any before/after-care plan depends on final space and vendor arrangements.
