The Dalhart City Council approved several routine and ceremonial items at its Jan. 27 meeting, including the consent agenda, a resolution calling a May general election, a proclamation designating April 26 as Rodeo Day and an item recognizing the Dalhart Chamber of Commerce as a host for a state small business summit.
Consent agenda: Council approved the minutes of the Jan. 13 regular meeting and the December financial reports and bills after a motion and second; the approval was recorded by voice vote.
Resolution 2025-1 (general election): The council adopted Resolution 2025-1 to call a general election to be held in May. A city staff member said the resolution92s materials are prepared in a condensed bilingual format to meet Texas requirements: "Texas requires that we have it in both English and in Spanish," the staff member said. The council approved the resolution by voice vote; signatures will be collected to finalize paperwork for candidates to file.
Rodeo Day proclamation: Council members discussed a request from the chamber and a newspaper representative to recognize April 26 as Rodeo Day to coincide with a hall-of-fame induction. A motion to designate April 26 as Rodeo Day in Dalhart passed by voice vote.
State small business summit: The Dalhart Chamber of Commerce informed council members it applied to be a host city for the governor's small business summits; the city was selected. Staff said the event is expected in October and could draw about 250 people, with the coliseum or the ERC as potential venues. The council approved the chamber-hosted summit recognition/acceptance by voice vote.
Votes at a glance
- Consent agenda (minutes of 01/13/2025; December financials and bills): approved by voice vote. - Resolution 2025-1 (calling general election for May 2025; bilingual posting format): adopted by voice vote. - Designate April 26, 2025, as Dalhart Rodeo Day: approved by voice vote. - Recognize Dalhart Chamber of Commerce as host for governor's small business summit in October (expected ~250 attendees; venue to be determined): approved by voice vote.
Why it matters: The resolution sets the statutory process for the May election and the chamber-hosted summit could bring regional visitors to Dalhart in October. The Rodeo Day designation is ceremonial but aligns city recognition with a local hall-of-fame event.
