Earth Week, island cleanup and Eagle Scout project highlighted at Grosse Ile open-space meeting

The Grosse Ile Greenways & Open Space Committee summarized several Earth Week and spring events at its April 1 meeting and discussed supporting an Eagle Scout’s proposed conservation project.
Chairman Stevenson and committee members invited residents and students to participate in a series of events: a Meridian Woods “Animals in Spring” program (Sunday, 1–2:30 p.m.), an Orioles talk at the John C. Jackson Resource Center (April 22, evening), the island-wide cleanup on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to noon (meeting at the Joe Berkey VFW Hall), an Earth Day celebration at the John C. Jackson Resource Center (Sunday, April 27, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.), and a “Creepy Crawlies” program at the bird sanctuary on May 3 (1–2:30 p.m.). The committee said program details are available on the conservancy’s website.
The committee noted it will coordinate the spring “Dump the Junk” event timing with the island cleanup to avoid conflicts and possibly complement the Kiwanis-organized cleanup. Stewardship volunteers meet weekly (Mondays, 9 a.m.–noon) to help maintain conservancy properties and are encouraged to attend.
The committee also said an Eagle Scout candidate, Joshua Burwold, asked to propose a project on open-space land; members encouraged him to develop plans and consult the committee and township for permitting and any necessary EGLE review for wetlands. Members said prior Eagle Scout projects (a recent observation deck) required fundraising, permitting and volunteer coordination but could be completed quickly once approvals and materials were secured.
No formal votes were required for the event announcements and the committee asked staff to continue outreach with schools and to provide cleanup supplies for student groups during Earth Week.
