Mayor Charlotte Wilcox proclaimed April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Highland Village during the March 25 council meeting and presented the proclamation to representatives of CASA of Denton County.
Jennifer Adame, community engagement specialist for CASA, told the council Denton County provided advocacy for more than 570 children in 2024 and that the local program relies on volunteers; she said CASA currently has about 70 children without assigned advocates and asked for community volunteer support. The proclamation cited volunteer hours and mileage recorded by Denton County CASA volunteers.
Two additional nonprofit representatives and volunteers described local needs for beds, clothing and other immediate support when children are removed from homes; City staff and council members discussed posting volunteer and resource links on the city website and confirmed staff would coordinate with CASA and Community Partners of Denton County to share volunteer information.
Ending: Council thanked the organizations for their work and staff said it would follow up with contact information and a possible web link to volunteer resources.
