Board approves summer technology refresh: district to replace Chromebooks, laptops and desktops

The Danville CCSD 118 Board of Education approved a summer technology refresh to replace student and staff devices, including roughly 800 Chromebooks, 75 staff laptops and 44 desktop computers.
Annette Hummel, director of technology, told the board the district will focus on larger 14‑inch Chromebooks for Northridge High School students this year and will recycle eligible devices from other grades where warranties remain. Hummel said devices typically follow a four- to five‑year replacement cycle; she said moving sooner is necessary because lease and software/security update lifecycles make older devices harder to secure and maintain.
The district presented a total package cost of $847,553.53, including lease and warranty. The district said Title I funds will cover $644,595.84 of the cost, leaving a local budget balance of $202,957.69 already accounted for in the district budget.
Board members asked about the necessity and timing of the replacements, and Hummel described cybersecurity and software‑support limitations on older devices as the primary justification for the refresh. The board approved the purchase unanimously in a roll-call vote.
Staff said the refresh will start with Northridge and then proceed to other schools, with device size choices for elementary grades to be made after additional feedback.
