Waterbury Career Academy students report competitions, certifications and staffing concerns

Two student representatives from Waterbury Career Academy briefed the board on academics, extracurriculars and staffing concerns during the April 9 meeting.
"My name is Tiffany Rodriguez representing Waterbury Career Academy," said Tiffany Rodriguez, a 12th-grade student, who described academic programs and student achievements. She reported EdRising students advanced to national-level competition and that an EdRising chapter hosted a blood drive yielding 30 donations. Rodriguez also said students had opportunities for CPR and first-aid certification, site visits to health providers, and positive outcomes in manufacturing, IT and engineering coursework.
Eleventh-grade student representative Annalia Baez reported athletics and upcoming events, including spring-sport tryouts, baseball and softball games, track meets and college visits. She said the boys basketball team won its third NBL title in a row and listed upcoming senior events and the prom.
The students also raised a staffing concern: one special-education teacher is transitioning to a new position, and the school’s ESL teacher is shared with Wilson Elementary School, which students said has strained support for learners who need assistance. "We hope by the next year there will be more support for the students and hopefully more teachers for them," one student representative said. The board did not vote on staffing at the meeting; the comments were delivered during the student-representative segment.
