District wins CTDOT microgrant: $155,000 for bikes and helmets across schools

"We put in for the Connecticut Department of Transportation active transportation Micro grama program for 31 schools and received $5,000 for every single 1 of our schools, which is a total of $155,000 to be able to provide bikes and helmets for students," Dr. Schwartz said during her presentation at West Side School’s auditorium. She said the district expects implementation likely in the fall.
District staff credited Louise Brown with leading the initiative and said the funds will be used to procure bikes and helmets for students; staff indicated a fall roll-out but did not provide specific delivery dates or a procurement timeline during the public remarks. No specific vendor or per-school deployment schedule was announced at the meeting.
The board did not vote on the grant award during the meeting; the announcement was part of the superintendent’s regular presentation to the board.
