Board approves consent items, facility use for Relay for Life and several service contracts

The Waterbury Board of Education approved several routine and contract items during its rescheduled regular meeting April 9 at West Side School.

The actions included approving the consent calendar, authorizing a facility use agreement with the American Cancer Society for a Relay for Life event at Crosby High School, approving preparation of schematic drawings and establishing a building committee for the Roberto Clemente International Dual Language School expansion, approving a professional services agreement under RFP 82-12 with These Vending Incorporated to provide local carrier service, and receiving the superintendent’s notifications for the board’s files.

The consent calendar (items 9.1–9.5) covered an amendment to a professional service agreement with New Opportunities, Inc.; an agreement with Klingberg Comprehensive Program Services, Inc., Hill School for special-education services; and routine school-facility use items. Commissioner Jackson moved approval of the consent calendar; the motion was seconded and carried without recorded opposition.

Vice President Brown moved to approve a facility-use agreement with the American Cancer Society to host Relay for Life at Crosby High School on June 14; the board discussed logistics and turf protection before approving the contract. The district staff described the event as operating roughly from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with setup earlier in the day; tents will be placed inside the track and measures were discussed to avoid turf damage. The board approved the motion.

The board also approved preparation of schematic drawings and outline specifications for an expansion of the Roberto Clemente International Dual Language School and established a building committee for that project. The motion to prepare schematic drawings and the motion to create the building committee were both moved by Vice President Brown and carried. The building committee was set to include Commissioners Latoya Ireland, Elizabeth Brown, Jacqueline Jackson, Rocco Orso and Melissa Serrano Adorno.

Commissioner Orso moved approval of a professional-service agreement under RFP 82-12 with These Vending Incorporated to provide local carrier service; the motion carried. The board then voted to receive and place on file the interim superintendent’s notifications (items 13.1–13.4). All recorded motions passed with the board announcing “motion carries,” with no roll-call tallies given in the meeting record.

Items approved were presented by district staff or moved by the board during the meeting agenda; no opposing votes were recorded on the audio transcript for these items.
