School committee approves trips, grants, calendar and a letter opposing proposed vocational admissions lottery

The Springfield Public Schools School Committee on April 16 approved a series of field trips and grant expenditures, ratified a collective bargaining agreement and voted to send a letter to the state opposing a proposed lottery-based approach to vocational-technical admissions.

In roll-call votes the committee approved:

- A High School of Commerce overnight trip to the All-Service National Junior ROTC Fitness Challenge Championships in Daytona (departing May 2, returning May 4). Motion by Vice Chair Monroe Naylor; second by Mister Gonzales. Roll call: Mister Gonzales — Yes; Attorney Murphy — Yes; Mister Collins — Yes; Miss Gresham — Yes; Miss Hurst — Yes; Miss Monroe Naylor — Yes; Mayor Sarno — Yes. The motion passed.

- A White Street Elementary overnight trip to Red Gate Farms in Ashfield, Massachusetts (departing May 28, returning May 30). Motion by Mister Gonzales; second by Miss Gresham. Roll call: Mister Gonzales — Yes; Attorney Murphy — Yes; Mister Collins — Yes; Miss Gresham — Yes; Miss Hurst — Yes; Miss Monroe Naylor — Yes; Mayor Sarno — Yes. The motion passed.

- Acceptance of a $16,400 TNTP Reimagine Teaching Grant to support district initiatives. Motion by Mister Gonzales; second by Miss Hurst. Roll call: all members voting indicated Yes; the measure passed.

- Three Project Lead The Way-related expenditures: $16,000 (gateway grant or local project), $30,000 (Project Lead The Way gateway grant), and $12,250 (high school engineering grant). Each item was introduced with subcommittee endorsement and passed by roll call; motions and seconds were recorded on the floor and votes were unanimous.

- Approval of the 2025–26 school committee meeting dates and calendar (packet provided in advance). Motion by Attorney Murphy; second by Miss Hurst. Roll call vote passed.

- A draft letter to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) expressing the committee’s opposition to a state proposal that would replace local vocational-technical admissions procedures with a full lottery. Committee members said the district had spent significant time developing local chapter 74 enrollment procedures and asked that the district retain local control. Motion passed by roll call after discussion and a recommendation that the clerk circulate a clean version for signatures.

- Ratification of the Integrated Clerks (Unit C) collective bargaining agreement. Motion by Attorney Murphy; second by Vice Chair Naylor. Roll call: all members voting indicated Yes; the measure passed.

Committee members repeatedly noted that several of the grant items had been vetted and unanimously recommended by the appropriate subcommittees before coming to the full committee. Vocational subcommittee members also described working quickly to draft the correspondence to DESE and suggested using the Mass Association of School Committees process to pursue a statewide resolution if the issue requires broader advocacy.
