Mayes Park tennis courts to be repaired after hurricane damage; project will include pickleball

City staff told the Columbia City Council that the Mayes Park renovation project will require a contract amendment to repair storm damage to tennis courts caused by Hurricane Helene.
A city representative (Madam Clark, speaking for parks project staff) said multiple trees fell onto a tennis court, prompting expanded work that will add new fencing, court repairs, net posts and lines, and accessibility improvements. The courts will continue to serve both tennis and pickleball, the staff member said, and the project’s expected completion date is around mid-May.
Councilmembers and staff noted the park has been active since portions opened and that the courts drew users during a recent event. The amendment related to storm damage was on the agenda as part of the consent items and moved forward with the rest of the consent package.
No fiscal totals for the amendment were read into the public record at the meeting; the staff member said the project remains “very active” and anticipates a ribbon-cutting later in the spring.
