Members of the Yakima Arts Commission reported March 19 on progress from three subcommittees: artist support, outreach and finance. The subcommittees outlined near-term events, outreach channels and financial goals intended to strengthen local artists’ access to grant funding and reduce technical barriers to public-art submissions.
The artist subcommittee said it has secured a date and local partners for a study hall to help artists apply for the Artist Trust Gap Grant, a $1,500 unrestricted project grant awarded statewide. The study hall is scheduled for Thursday, May 29 at Centennial Hall (donated exhibit space) and will include presentations from successful grantees and one-on-one guidance, according to the subcommittee report.
Why it matters: the Gap Grant helps artists complete projects and increases their visibility for further opportunities; the study hall aims to lower barriers for artists who lack experience preparing digital submissions or grant narratives.
Subcommittee highlights - Artist subcommittee: Margo Stroup reported outreach to Artist Trust and Mescla (a local Latine artist collective) and said the commission can provide venue support, outreach and possible transportation or lodging support for visiting trainers. The study hall will include discipline-specific breakout sessions and application-review assistance. - Outreach subcommittee: members proposed and discussed creating a City of Yakima Arts Commission landing page and an Instagram presence to distribute calls to artists and event notices. The group plans to coordinate with city IT and the city liaison (Bridal/Bridal Iniguez and Erica) to establish workflows and avoid overburdening staff. - Finance subcommittee: the finance report listed five draft goals including establishing a sustainable budget, strengthening financial accountability, securing support for key projects (trash cans, Windows Alive), pursuing grants, and funding public engagement work. The committee noted possible alignment with the Millennium Plaza Foundation for shared priorities.
Next steps: the artist subcommittee will host a Zoom meeting with Artist Trust to finalize needs (transport, lodging, outreach) and return to the commission with a budget request if necessary. The outreach team will work with IT and the city liaison to build and populate a landing page and evaluate social-media options. The finance committee will circulate its draft goals and action items for incorporation into the commission’s minutes and broader planning.
Ending: Subcommittees emphasized that workshops and better outreach could increase the quality and quantity of public-art submissions, and asked commissioners to assist with recruitment and local promotion.
