Yakima schedules April 16 open house for comp‑plan periodic update; staff seeks volunteers for climate resiliency task force

The City of Yakima Planning Commission announced on March 26 that the first public open‑house for the comprehensive‑plan periodic update will be 6–8:30 p.m. April 16 at the Henry Beauchamp Center (Southeast Community Center).
Staff said the session will include breakout groups led by Burke and will seek public input on what is working in the city, areas for improvement and visioning topics. The city is also recruiting volunteers for multiple advisory groups, including a specific task force to address the update’s required climate‑resiliency work.
Staff said the task forces and volunteer advisory groups will collect input, prepare material for staff review and report back to the planning commission; Burke will conduct interviews with community members as part of outreach. Trevor and staff will email a volunteer request and a tentative meeting schedule in the coming days. Commissioners volunteered to serve as possible members depending on timing and availability.
Staff also noted a potential planning‑commission workshop in July as part of the update process. A bill in the state legislature to extend the update deadline to December remains under consideration, staff said; if passed it would alter the city’s timeline.
No formal vote was required on the outreach schedule; staff will circulate volunteer sign‑up information by email.
