The Hutchinson City Council approved a $20,000 annual contribution to support the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I men’s national tournament — commonly branded as the "Road to Hutch" — after a presentation by NJCAA officials and local tourism staff.
Dr. Christopher Parker, president and CEO of the NJCAA, said the organization has increased its investment in the tournament model and that the event now includes national television exposure through ESPN and ESPN+. "For the last couple of years, we've invested over a new $60,000 a year in investment into the tournament," Parker said, noting the league’s production and hospitality expenses and the desire to raise the event’s profile.
Andrew Givens of the NJCAA and Leanne Cox of Visit Hutch described the partnership with local hosts — principally the American Legion, which holds the facility contract — and the economic benefits the tournament brings to the city. Visit Hutch provided preliminary lodging figures: the total number of team room nights generated by this year's event was 1,262, of which 787 room nights were spent in Hutchinson hotels. Cox said those numbers exclude fans and associated parties such as bands or cheer squads, who add additional local spending.
Council discussed the request as a promotional and tourism investment, noting the tournament’s national coverage and return visits from teams. Council approved the $20,000 support with a split vote: Richardson, Garza, Fast, Maggers and Meggers voted yes; Mayor Goss voted no.
City staff will process the contribution and the council asked Visit Hutch and NJCAA representatives to continue coordination with local hosts to maximize local lodging and event benefits.
